Social Security Disability Eligibilty and criteria for adults

Disability is a very sensitive topic and taken very seriously by the government. It is something that is heard or read by you almost everyday in the newspaper or through people but you rarely think you could get affected. Unfortunately, when disability does strike it spins on heads as it takes a huge toll on your budget. It can also disrupt your work/life balance.  

 If you or your adult child is disabled or unable to do any work under substantial gainful activity (SGA) then you may be eligible for social security disability through the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Here’s a few things to have mandatory before you file your application: 

 Job history  

  • Date your disability began to affect your ability at work 
  • Type of jobs (up to 5) that you had in the last 15 years before you became unable to work due to your disability 
  • Types of duties you did on the last job you had 

Education and Training  

  • Name of any special job or training or vocational training and date completed 

List of your Medical Conditions 

Information about other Medical Records 

  • Vocational rehabilitation services, public welfare, any prison/jail medical records 

Information about Doctors, Healthcare Professionals, Hospitals and Clinics 

  • Names and dates of medical tests you have had and who sent you to them 
  • Names, contacts, patient ID numbers, and dates of examination and treatments 
  • Names of prescribed medications, reasons for prescriptions and who prescribed them 

Employement Details for Current Year and Prior 2 years 

  • Employer names, employer start and end dates, total earnings (wages, tips etc) 

U.S. Military Service 

  • Type of duty and branch, service period dates  

Names and Date of Birth of Children who: 

  • Became disabled prior to age 22 
  • Are under age 18 and unmarried 
  • Are aged 18 to 19 and still attending secondary school 

Marriage and Divorce 

  • Name of current spouse or name of prior spouse (if the marriage lasted for more than 10 years) or ended in death 
  • Beginning and ending dates of marriage(s), place of marriage(s) (city, state or country if married outside the U.S.) 

Date and Place of Birth 

  • While this is obvious the date and place of birth is necessary and you should mention if you were born outside the U.S. 
  • Name of your birth country and your name at that time (if any of it has changed) 
  • Permanent resident card number (if you are not a U.S. citizen)

Enough work credits but denied social security? Here's a few things you might be doing wrong.

Social Security Disability Insurance is a Social Security tax fund under which individuals with enough work credits and history qualify. Applicants who qualify under SSDI should have paid social security taxes to qualify under SSDI. However, still applications which are not developed run a high risk of denial. A denial doesn’t necessarily indicate that you are not disabled. Although the disability may be beyond your control but filing out the application carefully and making sure you are not doing anything that shows up as misleading information in your application to the SSA could be the key to your SSDI acceptance. Here’s a few things you may be doing wrong

  • You don’t show hard medical evidence 

You need to prove that your disability is severe enough through your medical records. For example, you may be seeing your doctor for severe spinal pain. But your medical records do not indicate that the pain is interfering in your work life balance. This will result in denial. Hence, you need to discuss with your physician how the disability is interfering in your work/life balance and show it in medical records.

  • Your disability is not long lasting or would be soon recovered

Presented the case above, you may still be denied the SSDI benefits. Under SSA, your medical condition needs to be severe enough to prevent you from working for one or more year, or has a potential risk of death. For example, you are filing for SSDI following a motorbike or automobile accident resulting in a bone fracture. But if that bone fracture isn’t expected to last one year or impair your work ability, you may be denied. The only exception to one year rule is blindness. However, if the fracture is severe enough to last more than one year, you need to have medical evidence to back up your application.

  • You earn more than enough income
